A Little Bit About The Area of Corumbela…

Corumbela is a small village in La Axarquia at 650m above sea level with a current population of 300. The village is administered from Sayalonga town hall on the other side of the river Sayalonga valley 12km away by road. The country road on which the village sits above winds around following the contours of a spur. Corumbela is about 52km from the Malaga City and about 16km from Velez-Malaga.

The origins of Corumbela are unknown although the site was probably settled by Iberia tribes. The village name is of roman origin and means ‘dove’.

In 1493 the after the reconquest of Granada the Catholic monarchs awarded Corumbela to Diego Fernández de Córdoba, the second Count of Cabra. Corumbela was later passed to the Casa Ducal de Medinaceli. When he died in 1811 the Cadiz constitution was passed which banned the concept of dukes owning villages. From this time, it managed its own affairs until 1868 when the Ministry of Governance of national territory re-organised all the municipalities in Spain and Corumbela was united with Sayalonga.

Parish church San Pedro with a 14^th century mudéjar style tower that was originally the minart of the mosque on the site of the present church. The sister towers are at Archez and Salares. The tower is constructed with some rows of larger thick flat stones inlaid at intervals within the rows of bricks. The interior is well conserved.

Las 3 Fuentes, is a fountain just outside the village where natural spring water can be collected. Take the path by the football field down towards Rio Turbilla. There is also a Fuente de Velez on the outside of the village at the start of the footpath to Velez-Malaga (now the country road) Fuente del Monte on the Archez side of the village opposite the mirador, and within in the village was El Pozo Hondo a well which no longer exists.

Local specialities in Corumbela are el potaje de hinojos (fenel stew) also there is morcillas (sausages) and pan cateto (a country style bread) baked in a wood oven. La Era was the part of the village where wheat used to be threshed.

San Antón, feria (Festival) is traditionally the first week in July.

Semana Santa, on Jueves Santo (easter Thursday) there is the procesion of the Virgen Dolorosa and the Nazareno del Perdón. On Viernes Santo (Good Friday) there is the precession of Virgen Dolorosa and the Cristo Crucificado and on Easter Sunday there is Cristo Resucitado acompanies as always by the Virgen Dolorosa.
